Malaysian construction sector down 0.6pc
KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama) – The value of construction work done in the third quarter 2019 (3Q19) contracted 0.6 per cent year-on-year at RM36.1 billion from RM35.9 billion in the second quarter of this year (2Q19), said Chief Statistician Malaysia Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin.
He said civil the engineering subsector registered the highest growth in the 3Q19 at 7.5 per cent, followed by the special trade activities sub-sector at 2.8 per cent.
“However, the residential buildings and non-residential buildings sub-sectors, declined by 2.7 per cent and 11.6 per cent respectively,” he said in a statement yesterday.
He added the civil engineering sub-sector remained the key contributor to the value of construction work done with a 46.1 per cent share, followed by non-residential buildings (24.8 per cent), residential buildings (24.2 per cent) and special trades activities (4.9 per cent) .
Mohd Uzir said the private sector continued to propel the construction activity with a 54.3 per cent share of the value of construction work done (RM19.6 billion), compared to the public sector at 45.7 per cent (RM16.5 billion).
