Wholesale, retail trade up in Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR (BERNAMA) – Malaysia’s wholesale and retail trade volume index grew by 1.5 per cent year-on-year (y-o-y) to 127.5 points in the first quarter (Q1) of this year compared with Q1 2019, according to the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DoSM).
In a report released yesterday, Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the wholesale trade volume index grew 2.5 per cent y-o-y to 126.8 points, bolstered by wholesale of household goods (3.9 per cent) as well as food, beverages and tobacco (3.6 per cent).
Meanwhile, retail trade volume index increased by 1.8 per cent y-o-y to 138.6 points in the same quarter, supported by sale of food, beverages and tobacco in specialised stores (5.5 per cent) as well as in non-specialised stores (4.9 per cent).
DoSM said motor vehicles volume index fell by 3.5 per cent y-o-y to 97.6 points, following a decline in sales of motor vehicles (-6.2 per cent) as well as maintenance and repair (-1.9 per cent).
“Seasonally adjusted volume index recorded a negative growth of 3.8 per cent as against the fourth quarter of 2019.”
