Thailand: Business registrations up, value down

The number of startups rose 42% month-on-month in January, led by jewellery retail and construction, the Business Development Department announced on Tuesday
There were 6,279 new businesses registered last month, up  9% year-on-year, department director-general Banjongjit Angsu-Singh said.
The value of their registered capital was 16.49 billion baht, dropping by 26% month-on-month and 42% year-on-year.
The five most common newly registered businesses were jewellery retail, followed by construction, property development, management consultancy and machinery wholesale, Ms Banjongjit said.
There were 1,157 business that closed down in January, falling 77% month-on-month and 21% year-on-year.
At the end of January there were 1.37 million registered businesses with 20.62 trillion baht of registered capital.
Ms Banjongjit said it was expected at least 66,000 new businesses would be registered this year as the economy improves.
