Myanmar: Gems and food products added to National Export Strategy
Thursday, 14 July 2016 – The Ministry of Commerce has added gems and value-added food products to its National Export Strategy in the hope of creating thousands of new jobs. U Aung Soe, director at the ministry’s Trade Promotion Department, said yesterday the ministry would meet with gems entrepreneurs and food manufacturers to find out how the government can support their industries, before finalising the new strategy.
Past restrictions on exporting gemstones have resulted in big losses for Myanmar, he said. Finished products are sold at showrooms and emporiums, yet most foreign traders buy raw stones and add value to them overseas.
Adding gems to the National Export Strategy should encourage more local value-added businesses to open, he said, creating job opportunities and eventually a thriving market for finished products. Read More?
