Myanmar hopes to export corn to Thailand

Traders are discussing plans for Myanmar to export one million tonnes of corn seeds to Thailand. An agreement between the two countries is expected before year-end, said U Min Khaing, chair of the Myanmar Corn Industrial Association.

“We are in the process of finalising a contract with the Public Warehouse Organisation in Thailand to export the corn in various grades,” he said.

Discussions began in November and the current corn price is between K460 and K480 per viss.

However, export prices have not been fixed and will depend on the market. Thailand is expected to use the corn as animal feed and as an industrial raw material.

If successful, Thailand would open up a new export market for corn farmers in Myanmar, many of whom rely on illegal exports to China for a living.

“In Myanmar, there are many farmers who grow corn and there is no shortage of supply. Corn is an important ingredient in animal feed. If Myanmar manages to export to Thailand business will be more profitable for local corn farmers,” said Dr Thet Mhu, chair of Myanmar Aqua feed Association.
