Malaysia: Wholesale and retail volume index up 9.9% in 4Q

KUALA LUMPUR: The volume index of the wholesale and retail trade Malaysia registered a 9.9 percent growth year-on-year (y-o-y) in the fourth quarter (4Q) of 2022, bringing the overall performance for 2022 to 14.3 percent, the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) said.

Chief Statistician Malaysia Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin attributed the increase to the retail trade sub-sector, which rose 19.3 percent, followed by motor vehicles and wholesale trade, which increased 7.0 percent and 0.9 percent, respectively.

“For quarter-on-quarter comparison, volume index increased 1.6 percent, supported by motor vehicles which grew 5.1 percent,” he said in a statement today.

Moving on to performances across sub-sectors, Mohd Uzir said the volume index of retail trade recorded a 19.3 percent growth, contributed by retail sales of automotive fuel in specialised stores with 35.7 percent.

“This was followed by the retail sale of other goods in specialised stores (32.9 percent) and retail sale of non-specialised stores (22 percent).

“Meanwhile, the volume index of retail trade climbed up 2.0 percent as compared to the previous quarter,” he added.

Mohd Uzir said the volume index of the wholesale trade sub-sector recorded a 0.9 percent growth in 4Q 2022, compared to the same quarter in 2021, contributed by wholesale of agricultural raw materials and live animals of 13.7 percent.

“As for the seasonally adjusted volume index, wholesale and retail trade decreased 1.8 percent as against 3Q 2022.

The wholesale trade and retail trade sub-sectors recorded a decline of 2.0 percent and 0.1 per cent, respectively.

“Volume index of wholesale and retail ended 2022 with 142.1 points, up 14.3 percent, supported by motor vehicles, retail trade and wholesale trade, which grew 39.2 percent, 19.2 percent, and 3.6 percent, respectively,” he added. – Bernama
