Malaysia auto sales among worst in Asean in 2017
KUALA LUMPUR: The sale of vehicles increased in all Asean countries except Malaysia and Brunei last year.
Total sales in Malaysia fell by 3,450 units to 576,635 from 580,085 in 2016, according to the Asean Automotive Federation (AAF).
The Edge Markets quoted the AAF as saying Brunei sold 15% less in 2017 at 11,209 units.
Although Malaysia’s production fell by 8%, it still ranked third in that category.
Malaysia made 499,639 units of motor vehicles in 2017, compared with 545,253 units in 2016. Thailand was ranked at the top, producing 1.99 million units while Indonesia made 1.22 million units.
Positive growth, however, was marked in the production and sale of motorcycles and scooters. Malaysia produced 11% more motorcycles and scooters, at 440,673 units last year compared with 395,938 units in 2016. Sales were 10% higher at 434,850 units, compared with 396,343 units in 2016.
Vietnam was the only other Asean country with declining vehicle production in 2017, with a 17% drop to 195,937 units.
According to the report, overall, Myanmar was the fastest growing car market in 2017. Its production increased to 4,930 units from 1,152 in 2016 and its sales nearly doubled to 8,225 units from 4,168 in 2016
