Laos, Vietnam to continue labour development cooperation

Lao and Vietnamese authorities have confirmed that they will continue to cooperate to develop labour skills in Laos and protect workers’ rights in the two countries.
Participants at the annual Laos-Vietnam Labour and Social Welfare meeting in Vientiane yesterday reached consensus on a number of measures to promote bilateral labour ties which mainly focus on building comprehensive bilateral cooperation and expanding and raising the effectiveness of labour related plans.

Deputy Minister of Labour and Social Welfare, Mrs Baykham Khattiya said the meeting focused on reviewing the implementation of the content of the annual Labour and Social Welfare Conference – Laos – Vietnam in 2017 in Vietnam.
“We also emphasised the necessity for the two countries to disseminate agreements reached between their governments regarding labour management policies and regulations”, she said.
“We are confident that the bilateral delegation will increase the responsibility for dialogue and exchange lessons to find the issues necessary to make production more effective in both cooperation and social welfare of both parties,” Mrs Baykham added.
She noted that Lao-Vietnamese cooperation has played an important role in the sustainable development of the labour sector in the country and made a positive contribution to peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region and the world in general.
Many Vietnam supported labour projects have been implemented in Laos aiming to upgrade Lao professional competence and capacity to internationally recognised standards.
For several years, the two ministries have held annual labour meetings to discuss workers’ rights, protection and support for health policy to assist those affected by occupational diseases. Around 15,000 Vietnamese workers and technicians are working in Laos in joint venture projects, in both the public and private sectors. Numerous Vietnamese businesses and economic organisations have also invested in or won bidding contracts in Laos.
According to the ministry, over 42,000 foreign workers have registered in Laos mainly from Vietnam, China and Thailand and about 23,000 have upgraded their nationality status.
