Laos to Provide Over 300,000 Employment Opportunities Next Year
The Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare expects to provide training and employment for more than 300,000 workers nationwide.
Vientiane Times reports that Ms. Anousone Khamsingsavath, Director General of the Department of Employment said that the ministry wants to provide relevant training to 392,000 workers and assist them with securing job placements.
The figures were revealed at a workshop discussing the ways to reduce the vulnerability of returnee migrant workers by providing them with guidance to pursue employment opportunities and support their integration into local economic development.
According to Ms. Anousone, the event also reviewed the cooperation between the International Labour Organisation and Japan (ILO-Japan Partnership Programme) through the ILO offices in Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos for employment management during the Covid-19 pandemic.
At a time when the latest unemployment figures in Laos stand at more than 61,000 due to an economic recession plaguing the country, the Ministry of Labor has vowed to assist unemployed people in both urban and rural Laos to obtain gainful employment.
Meanwhile, due to a low minimum wage rate, Lao workers continue to seek employment abroad, particularly in Thailand and South Korea, despite the efforts of the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare to retain them in Laos.
