Laos, Thailand partner in digital, ICT development

The Ministry of Post and Telecommunications has agreed to work with Thailand’s Ministry of Digital Economy and Society to continue developing the information and communications technology (ICT) and digital innovation sectors.
A cooperation agreement between the two countries was signed in Vientiane on Friday. The document was signed by Laos’ Minister of Post and Telecommunications, Dr Thansamay Kommasith, and Minister of Thailand’s Digital Economy and Society, Dr Pichet Durongkaveroj.
The main purpose of the agreement is the development of human resources, digital government initiatives, cybersecurity, data centres and the ICT digital sectors.
The development and exchange of experiences in ICT will further strengthen the special traditional relationship and comprehensive cooperation between the two countries.
Thailand’s Ministry of Digital Economy and Society has agreed to provide support and assistance to Laos’ Ministry of Post and Telecommunications for a short training course on digital and ICT systems, for Lao officials.
The two sides will also share experiences on policy for the ICT and digital sectors and continue development of the Lao Computer Emergency Response Team (LaoCERT) and Thai Computer Emergency Response Team (ThaiCERT).
The digital and ICT sectors are key elements for promoting trade and technology exchanges as well as for the economic, social and cultural development of the two sides. 
ICT in Laos continues to grow and has an impact on many sectors but compared to other countries in the region there are still challenges and a large development gap, according to officials.
The government has made efforts to overcome barriers and create an environment that fosters the growth of ICT industries through the Vision 2030, Strategy 2025, Development Plan 2020 and the E-Government Plan 2020. The government is also working closely with regional and international organisations towards common goals.
