KPPU Concerns of Economic Inequality in Indonesia

TEMPO.COJakarta – Business Competition Supervisory Commission (KPPU) Chairman Syarkawi Rauf admits that the level of economic inequality in Indonesia is in a very worrying state.

“The inequality in Indonesia is nearly reaching [the level of disparity in] several African countries,” said Syarkawi today, July 14.

According to Syarkawi, this phenomenon can happen because of several reasons. “The first is the rise of conglomeration. Business integrity is too concentrated under a single group of ownership in almost every sector,’ he said.

The second reason is the limited number of major business players dominating strategic sectors.

Syarkawi said that KPPU must increase its role in the national economy during its 17th anniversary.
