Indonesia’s growing interest for investment in Cambodia

Indonesia is interested in investment opportunities in Cambodia in the agriculture, agro-industry, renewable energy, construction and real estate sectors.

That interest was raised at a meeting between Indonesian Ambassador to Cambodia Sudirman Haseng and Cambodian conglomerates in the agricultural and real estate sectors. The meeting included Lim Heng, vice-president of the Cambodia Chamber of Commerce, Mong Reththy, president of Mong Reththy Group and Sear Rithy, president of WorldBridge Group. “We talked about boosting investment from Indonesia to Cambodia. There are plenty of Indonesian [investors] who have shown interest in the agricultural sector,” Heng said, adding that, post-pandemic, the group will be able to meet in person and sectors with investment potential will be able to showcase their work to attract investment in building processing factories here for exports.

Mong Reththy said he appreciated the ambassador’s support in finding ways to advance investment post-Covid and strengthening the long-term relationship between the two countries. Heng said now is a fortuitous time for foreign investors to look to Cambodia in advance of the looming ratification, signing and exploratory discussions of various trade agreements.

Cambodians increasingly appear to favour Indonesian products including food and beverages, fruit (especially salak, a species of palm tree) and batik-style clothes, said Sudirman Haseng.

He cited the Indonesia-Cambodia Joint Commission on Bilateral Cooperation, a framework designed to discuss bilateral matters and how best the two nations can work together on political cooperation, economic, socio-culturalism, defence, security, tourism and regional and multilateral issues.
