Indonesian LNG makes up less than 1% of Singapore’s natural gas imports: MTI
LIQUEFIED natural gas (LNG) from Indonesia made up less than 1 per cent of Singapore’s annual natural gas imports on average between 2020 and 2022, Minister for Trade and Industry Gan Kim Yong said in a written parliamentary reply on Monday (Jul 3).
He was responding to Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC Member of Parliament Saktiandi Supaat, whose questions followed reports that Indonesia intends to ban the export of LNG. Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan later said the country has no plans for an outright ban.
On Monday, Gan said that Singapore sources its LNG globally – including from Australia, Qatar, the United States, and Indonesia – to mitigate the impact of a disruption of any single natural gas supply source on its short-term energy security.
LNG supply contracts are negotiated by Singapore’s importers on a commercial basis, he added. “We are unable to divulge the specifics of these contracts, including their volumes and expiry dates, as these are commercially sensitive.
“Singapore will continue to ensure that our energy sources are well-diversified, as well as press on in our efforts to decarbonise the power sector and enhance our energy security,” Gan said.
