Indonesia: Tax office receives 70.15 percent of all taxes by Saturday

The Directorate General of Taxation has announced that 10.93 million taxpayers, or 70.15 percent of its target of 15.58 million taxpayers, had filed their annual tax returns (SPTs) by Saturday night, one day before the March 31 deadline.

Earlier, Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati announced that 10,051,101 individual taxpayers had filed their taxes by Saturday morning.

“The 10.93 million taxpayers that submitted their SPTs accounted for 59.7 percent of all taxpayers that are required to file [their taxes],” said tax office spokesman Hestu Yog Saksama, as reported by kontan.co.id on Monday.

Hestu said various efforts had been undertaken to encourage taxpayers to file their SPTs, including visits to private companies and government offices to remind employees and inform them of the simplified online tax facility, or e-filing.

Hestu also expressed his optimism that more taxpayers would submit their SPTs on Sunday and by the one-day grace period on Monday to avoid the Rp 100,000 fine for late filing. He said the grace period was issued according to Director General of Taxation Regulation No. 95/PJ/2019, and was especially relevant to corporate taxpayers.

“The extension [Monday] is only for submitting the SPT, while the payments should be completed on March 31 at the latest,” he said, adding that if taxpayers failed to pay by March 31, they were liable to an additional fine amounting to 2 percent of their unpaid taxes.

Hestu said the tax office would closely monitor all taxpayers that had not filed their annual tax returns. (bbn)
