Indonesia: Survey : Half of East Indonesians Have No Bank Accounts

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas), in collaboration with Australia and Switzerland, conducted a survey in 2016 on the finance inclusion in East Indonesia. Twenty thousand respondents took part in the survey throughout East Java, West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara, and South Sulawesi.

The report reveals that 41 percent of citizens living in the four provinces have utilized banking services. Meanwhile, 72 percent of adults in the four provinces have used formal financial services provided by either bank or non-bank financial institutions.

The report that was issued today by Bappenas head Bambang Brodjonegoro shows that 53 percent of these respondents do not own bank accounts. Most of them still use bank accounts owned by their relatives or friends.

According to the survey, respondents who have not used banking services live in rural areas. Most of them did not attend formal education or are elementary school graduates.

Meanwhile, respondents who live in urban areas have at least finished junior high school education or higher. They consist of people who are categorized as middle and higher classes.
