Indonesia: Sri Mulyani Says Inflation Figure in April a Good Achievement
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Finance Minister Sri Mulyani said that inflation figure in April 2017 is a good achievement.
The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) records inflation of 0.09 percent in April. Inflation of the calendar year was at 1.28 percent and year-on-year inflation was 4.17 percent. Last month, the BPS recorded deflation of 0.02 percent.
Sri Mulyani said that the government is striving to keep inflation from eroding purchasing power. “Deflation that occurred particularly in food commodity will have a good impact on urban people on the one hand. But we may have to be wary in terms of inequality,” she said.
According to Sri Mulyani, urban people will enjoy stable price due to deflation. But inequality may occur in rural areas as farmers’ purchasing power has to be maintained.
Sri Mulyani added that the government continues to try to keep inflation near the full-year target of 4 percent.
