Indonesia: Ministry Explores New Export Markets

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Trade Ministry is currently attempting to penetrate new export markets. Minister Enggartiasto Lukita stated that a domestic company has managed to enter African countries, such as Kenya and Nigeria. “Indofood is already operating [in Africa], the industry has entered the [African] market,” Enggartiasto said on Tuesday, February 21, 2017.

In addition to Indofood, food company Mayora has also reported to expand to the African continent. Enggartiasto added that state officials will continue to urge other industries to expand to new export countries. “We’ll overcome a number of non-tariff barriers and also conduct joint studies,” Enggartiasto said.

Aside from Africa, Enggartiasto said, the Eurasian regions also possess large potentials to become a new export target countries for Indonesia. Enggartiasto said that the Trade Ministry is currently planning to conduct a joint study between Indonesia and Russia. “We will raise the level in new markets while not forgetting about existing export markets,” Enggartiasto said.

During a meeting with the Trade Ministry, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo stated that Indonesia must open new export markets. According to Jokowi, Indonesia’s export value to Africa has only reached US$ 4.2 billion, far lower than the potential market of US$ 550 billion.
