Indonesia: Minister Predicts 2017 Inflation at 4 Percent

TEMPO.COJakarta – Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Darmin Nasution predicted that the inflation rate will reach four percent by the end of 2017. However, he said that the government will attempt to suppress it below four percent.

“I expect it will be 4 percent. But we will do our best to keep it lower,” said Minister Darmin on Tuesday, August 1.

In July 2017, the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded that the consumer price index experienced a 0.22 percent inflation compared to that in May 2017. Meanwhile, the inflation rate based on the calendar year was 2.6 percent with an annual inflation of 3.88 percent.

Minister Darmin said the government hopes the inflation will drop in the remaining of 2017.

According to data from BPS, the July 2017 inflation was driven by the 0.57 inflation rate from several categories such as food, beverages, cigarettes, and tobacco.

Meanwhile, other categories such as education, recreations, and sports experienced a 0.62 percentinflation, which drove the July 2017 inflation.
