Indonesia: May Inflation Can be Higher than April’s : BPS

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Head of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) Suhariyanto said inflation rate in May this year is likely to be higher than that in April 2017 that was recorded at 0.09 percent.

“It seems that inflation in May will be higher but it is not significant because the government has taken control of prices,” Suhariyanto said in Jakarta on Friday, May 26.

He added that inflation rate in May would be influenced by the fluctuation of prices of food commodities that rose in the first and second weeks in May but dropped in the third and the fourth week.

“In the third and the fourth week, it will drop again. Prices of several commodities such as garlic and meat have also dropped while the price of sugar is also in control,” he added.

Suhariyanto hopes that the declining trend of food commodities can be maintained until Ramadan and the Eid Day, so the inflation will not be high in June.

Previously, BPS reported that inflation in April 2017 was recorded at 0.09 percent due to the adjustment in electricity rate for 900VA non-subsidized households during the month.
