Indonesia: F&B contribution to GDP steadily increases despite slow growth
The contribution of the food and beverage (F&B) sector to gross domestic product (GDP) increased steadily over the past four years in spite of the decrease last year, the Indonesian Food and Beverage Producers Association (GAPMMI) has said.
“The F&B sector’s contribution to GDP increased to 6.25 percent last year from 6.14 percent in 2017, 5.97 percent in 2016, 5.61 percent in 2015 and 5.32 percent in 2014,” said GAPMMI chairman Adhi Lukman recently.
Meanwhile, the growth of the industry reached 7.91 percent in 2018, compared to 9.23 percent in 2017, 8.33 percent in 2016, 7.54 percent in 2015 and 9.49 percent in 2014, he added.
Adhi said the country’s food and beverage production increased by 6.77 percent in the first quarter of the year.
Meanwhile, the Industry Ministry’s agro industry director general, Abdul Rochim, said the contribution of F&B industry to GDP reached 6.35 percent in the first quarter of 2019.
“The quarterly contribution of the F&B sector reached 31.6 percent to the whole non-oil and non-gas industry,” he said.
The Industry Ministry projects 9 percent growth in the food and beverage industry in 2019 with total contribution of Rp 63 trillion (US$4.46 billion).
Abdul said investment in the sector had reached Rp 14.6 trillion as of the first quarter, up from Rp 12.5 trillion in the same period last year.(syk/bbn)
