Indonesia: BPS records 0.59 percent inflation in June
The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) announced Monday that the inflation rate was recorded at 0.59 percent, which is considered a low rate, during the Ramadhan and Idul Fitri holiday season.
The figure is higher than the 0.21 percent inflation recorded in May.
Year-to-date inflation was recorded at 1.90 percent and year-on-year inflation at 3.12 percent.
“This 3.12 percent [inflation] is still lower than the [government] inflation target of 3.5 percent,” BPS head Suhariyanto told a press conference.
He noted that this year’s June inflation was lower than last year’s 0.69 percent.
“This is an encouraging figure. We have to appreciate the government’s hard work in maintaining low prices [of staple foods] prior to the Idul Fitri holiday,” he said.
The biggest contributors to the inflation came from the transportation sector, communications and financial services and price changes in food.
Specifically, an increase in airfares for transportation during the Idul Fitri holiday was the top contributor to inflation at 0.26 percent, while price increases in fresh fish and chicken meat also contributed heavily to the rate. (bbn)
