Foreign Visits to Indonesia Down 12% in January

TEMPO.COJakarta – The central statistics agency, Statistics Indonesia or BPS, recorded a 12.15% monthly decline in foreign visits throughout the month of January. During the first month of 2022, only 143,800 people visited Indonesia from abroad.

“But if we look at the year-on-year figures, there was a 13.62 percent increase from January 2021,” BPS deputy for distribution and statistical services, Setianto, said in a press conference, Tuesday, March 1st.

Based on the country of origin, the highest number of foreign arrivals came from Timor Leste with 76,500 visitors or 53.2 percent, followed by Malaysia with 42,000 or 29.2 percent, and then China with 3,400 visitors or 2.4 percent.

Statistics showed that 65.7 percent or 94,400 of the foreign travelers Indonesia by land. Those who entered by sea reached 34,800 people or 24.2 percent.

The number of people who entered Indonesia by air was very small, just 10.1 percent or around 14,600 people.

Not just for international arrivals, air transportation passengers on domestic routes on a monthly basis also decreased. Domestic flights traffic in January fell 2.61 percent compared to December to 2021. “But on an annual basis it rose 66.59 percent,” Setianto said.
