UK firm launches new cruise linking Cambodia, Vietnam

Leading tour specialist Wendy Wu Tours last week officially launched a new cruise service linking Can Tho, in southern Vietnam’s Mekong Delta region, with Phnom Penh.

The route will be serviced by the Victoria Mekong, a 35-cabin, four-star cruise ship.

The ship has a 360-degree-view restaurant on the upper deck as well as shopping stores, spas, libraries, and cinemas, according to a statement from Wendy Wu.

The Victoria Mekong cruise ship is a joint venture between Vietnam-based Thien Minh Group and Wendy Wu Tours, the UK’s leading Asia tour specialist.

A 3-4 night tour begins at about $906, which includes meals and beverages onboard.

The company said a cruise from Vietnam to Cambodia is the best way to see the cultural diversity between the two countries. “River cruises – rather than land tours – are quickly gaining popularity among foreign tourists.”

John Warr, global sales director at Wendy Wu Tours, said the launch of the new service helps the company establish itself as a key player in the Mekong.

“The Victoria Mekong is a very exciting addition to our portfolio, filling what is a huge gap in the market,” he said.

Thong Khon, the Minister of Tourism, said recently that to support the dynamic growth of tourism, the development of air, land, water and rail transportation and other infrastructure is necessary.

The minister said Cambodia aims to attract about one million Vietnamese tourists in 2020. He noted that now about 900,000 Vietnamese tourists visit Cambodia every year.

Mr Khon said that about 15 percent of Vietnamese tourists use air transportation while the rest travels by land or ship.
