Singapore firm announces plans for local solar sector
Singapore-based Indochina Energy Partners is focusing on rooftop solar installations in three Southeast Asian nations, including Cambodia.
According to a report by ScanAsia released Monday, IEP is working on rooftop photovoltaic panel installations in Vietnam, Myanmar and Cambodia.
Thomas Jakobsen, IEP managing director, said the company is already successful in Vietnam’s rooftop photovoltaics sector. Funded by Scandinavian investment, the company operates under a build-own-operate-transfer (BOOT) rental and lease model.
The same investment model will be applied to the Cambodian and Burmese markets, Mr Jakobsen said.
“For the rooftop PV solar, we provide installation, maintenance and financial solutions for commercial and industrial factory owners,” he said.
Sokun Sum, chairman of the Solar Energy Association of Cambodia, said demand for rooftop PV systems is growing in Cambodia.
“Rooftop PV panels started to become popular here since 2018 when the government allowed the private sectors to connect PV systems to the national grid,” he told Khmer Times on Monday.
“Installing a PV system can reduce the energy bill by as much as 40 percent,” he explained.
Mr Sokun noted that as of lately many local companies, factories and households are installing PV systems to reduce electricity bills.
“This help boosts profit because they can significantly cut costs,” he said.
He said demand for the systems in the residential sector, such as borey projects, is also strong.
The government recently announced that about 15 percent of all energy produced in the Kingdom will come from solar panels by 2020, and that the country will be producing at least 390 megawatts from solar farms by next year.
