Laos: Public, Private Discuss Tourism Promotion
(KPL) Representatives from public and private sectors met in Vientiane Capital on Nov 29 to discuss ways to strengthen tourism industry as Visit Laos Year 2018 activities have been scheduled to attract more visitors.
The discussion at the consultative meeting held at Muongthanh Luxury Vientiane Hotel was focused on the preparation of a number of activities for “Visit Laos Year 2018” in an effort to attract more foreign visitors.
Laos has an ambitious plan to have more than 5.2 million foreigners visiting the country and increase the annual income generated by foreign visitors to over US$900 million in 2018.
A number of activities have been scheduled for Visit Laos Year 2018 including Hmong New Year in Xieng Khuang, Khmu New Year, Phabath Phonsan Stupa Festival in Borikhamxay, City Pillar Festival of 10 Ethnic Groups in Xieng Khuang, Vat Phou Festival in Champassak, Phathat Sikottabong Festival in Khammuan, Dok Gniew Festival in Bokeo, Elephant Festival in Xayaboury, and Festival of 17 Ethnic Groups in Luang Namtha.
Lao New Year celebration in Luang Prabang, Boat Racing Festival in Phongsaly, and That Inghang Festival are also the highlights of Visit Laos Year 2018.
At the meeting, Deputy Head of the Tourism Development Department of ADB, Mr Thaviphet Oula urged public and private sectors to work together to develop tour packages for foreign visitors.
He said that ADB has earmarked a funding to support government efforts to attract foreign travellers to the country.
