Indonesia: No Gas Imports Needed for Indonesia In 2019
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Indonesian State Officials predict that the country does not need to import gas in 2019. This is because there are extra productions from three fields, Jangkrik, Tangguh Train 3, and Masela Block.
Directorate General of oil and gas, I Gusti Nyoman Wiratmaja Puja, claimed that the success of the fields that were designed to produce 400-450 MMSCFD actually performed much higher than expected. “It could be increased to 600 MMSCFD,” said Wirat.
The Tangguh Train 3 field will start to flow gas on stream by 2020 which will add 3.8 million ton per annual (MTPA) to the reserve. Meanwhile, the Masela Block is expected to produce 9.5 MTPA plus an added 150 MMSCFD.
Wirat argues that 2019 doesn’t require any imported gas because the domestic consumption of gas isn’t as much as expected. The amount of gas necessary to produce 35,000 MW electricity has also dropped because the construction of gas powered power plants (PLTG) had not been completed.
“We surely hope the PLTG owned by PLN is introduced. Our gas consumption would be just as expected because the quite large power plant consumes a large amount of gas, meanwhile [gas consumption] for transportation and industrial uses only increased ever so slightly,” Wirat added.
