Indonesia – BPS: Tourist Visits Down in September
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The number of foreign tourists who visited Indonesia in September 2017 fell 13.67 percent compared to August, the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) announced.
On a year-on-year basis, however, the BPS said that the number of tourist visits rose 20.47 percent from September last year.
BPS chief Suhariyanto told reporters on Wednesday that one of the factors for the increase was the use of Mobile Positioning Data (MPD), which covers data on foreign tourists visiting border areas, whose records had not been recorded at the Immigration Check Point (TPI).
The biggest number of foreign tourists who visited came from China with 15.04 percent, followed by Singapore (10.13 percent), Australia (9.77 percent), Malaysia (8.80 percent), and Japan (4.64 percent).
“The increase and decrease in foreigners’ visit is determined by holiday seasons. It is not surprising that in September the number is smaller than August,” he said.
The BPS predicts that towards the end of the year, the number of visits will rise again, coinciding with the Christmas and the new year holidays in December.
