E-wallet allows Asian visitors to make VND payment at Vietnam airport
The Hanoitimes – Asian tourists to Vietnam can make e-payment in VND at SASCO duty-free and retail shops in the internatsional terminal of Ho Chi Minh City’s Tan Son Nhat International Airport from January 1, 2018.
The Vimo Technology Joint Stock Company (Vimo.vn) and Southern Airport Services Joint Stock Company (SASCO) on December 19 signed a co-operation agreement on launching the e-payment services for Asian tourists when travelling into Vietnam.
The service supports foreign customers paying with Wechat Pay electronic accounts installed on mobile phones to scan quick response (QR) code and make payment transactions quickly and conveniently. One of the advantages of QR code payment is that customers do not need to carry neither a wallet nor multiple cards, do not worry about their card information at the payment points.

SASCO is the leader in airport services in Vietnam, with a network of duty-free shops, retail outlets, business class lounges, and food chains.
Nguyen Van Hung Cuong, SASCO’s deputy director said, in accordance with the trend of electronic commerce, the company wants to catch up with the trend, leverage technology to optimize the business model, bring the pros convenient, smart choice, best quality and most competitive prices for customers. Besides, the application of this advanced payment method also contributes to reduce the proportion of cash payment under the Government’s guidelines, he added.
VIMO e-wallet is the first payment intermediary in Vietnam allowing travelers to use WeChat Pay e-wallets paid for in VND at VIMO-accepting shops when traveling in Vietnam. Currently, Vino.vn has nearly 500 stores accepting payments by WeChat Pay, including more than 50 stores of seven corporations at five international airports.
Do Cong Dien, General Director of VIMO, said that VIMO will further boost the co-operation with other business units around the country to build a secure, convenient non-cash payment environment for international tourists when visiting Vietnam as well as raising revenue for the country’s tourist sector.
Vietnam’s tourism revenue this year is expected to rise by VND100 trillion (US$4.4 billion) against last year to VND500 trillion, according to Nguyen Van Tuan, Director of the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT). The total is also VND40 trillion higher than the full-year target set earlier this year.
Minister of Sport, Culture and Tourism Nguyen Ngoc Thien has also required VNAT to focus on promoting and attracting visitors from strategic and Asian markets to help the country’s tourism sector meet the target of receiving at least 13 million foreign tourists in 2017.
The number of foreign arrivals in Vietnam surged by 14.4 percent to 1.17 million in November, bringing the total number of foreign visitors to the country over 11 months to 11.645 million, up 27.8 percent against the same period last year.
The number of visitors from Asia rose 32.6 percent over eleven months compared to last year’s corresponding period. The highest growth was seen in travelers from the Republic of Korea (up 55.3%), trailed by China (up 44.9%), Taiwan (up 20.9%), Malaysia (up 16.5%), Thailand (up 12.1%), Singapore (up 7.4%), and Japan (up 7.7%).
