Cambodia wins eco-tour expo title

Cambodia has been named as “The Most Wonderful Eco-Tour” destination by the International Travel Expo Hong Kong 2017 and a leading Hong Kong-based magazine.

A Tourism Ministry delegation was among groups from 55 major tourism destination countries and 650 tour operators at the expo from Thursday to Sunday.

“During the event, Cambodia was honoured by the leading lifestyle publication U Magazine and the expo organisers awarded the country ‘The Most Wonderful Eco-Tour’ title,” So Visothy, ministry undersecretary of state, told local media.

He said Hong Kong was among the top ten global markets for tourism while the expo was one of the largest tourism events in Hong Kong, with approximately 12,000 trade visitors.

The number of Hong Kong tourists to Cambodia was low, at 16,000 in 2016, but Cambodia expects the number to rise with increasing flights.

In April, the Hong Kong Civil Aviation Authority signed an agreement to increase flights from Hong Kong to Cambodia. The Secretariat of Civil Aviation signed the agreement with the Hong Kong Civil Aviation Authority to add between 21 and 28 flights per week.

Ho Vandy, secretary-general of the Cambodia National Tourism Alliance, said the expansion of flights from Hong Kong would benefit Cambodian tourism and increase business between the countries.

“The number of Hong Kong tourists will increase, and tourism service providers should take this into account and upgrade their services to make it attractive for these tourists to stay in the country longer,” Mr Vandy said.

“This will generate more income as well as jobs for people.

“Hong Kong tourists are big spenders like the mainland Chinese. However, we have to attract not only Hong Kong tourists.  We have to attract tourists from other countries as well.”
