Cambodia: Vehicle tax payment via mobile app launched

The General Department of Taxation (GDT) at the Ministry of Economy and Finance has launched a mobile app to enable people to make vehicle tax payments in a move to facilitate the procedure during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Taxpayers can pay their vehicle tax through seven partnered banks that have cooperated with the DGT, said its Director-General Kong Vibol.

The taxpayers have a choice as to  whether they can pay tax at banks or tax departments physically or pay online via the app, he said in a monthly meeting held on Wednesday.

“The GDT has a new tool that provides further facilities [to pay] using the app, which is a new way of saving time and travel,” Vibol said.

“After paying tax via the app, stickers for labelling on the vehicles will be delivered to their locations,” he said. “It will be easy as the deadline of vehicle tax payment ends: They can pay via the app.”

The number of vehicle tax payments in Cambodia has increased remarkably, reflecting the understanding of people and taxpayers, he said.

Named the “GDT Taxpayer” app, taxpayers can check their history and background of vehicle tax payments.

Vehicles have to be registered at the Ministry of Public Works and Transport to be eligible to use the app.

The online vehicle tax payment is aimed at reducing the number of people gathering together closely during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The DGT announced the collection of vehicle tax from June to Nov 30.

Those who fail to pay vehicle tax will be fined double the normal cost of the tax.

Last year, some 735,000 vehicles were taxed with a total income of $90 million, 35 percent above the target.

There were nearly 100,000 newly registered vehicles.

The GDT in collaboration with traffic police will check the tax payment on vehicles from February next year.

According to figures from the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the income from customs on  imported vehicles during the first semester this year accounted for 42 percent of the total receipts.

The ministry’s report noted the customs income on vehicle imports was $488 million.
