Cambodia: Thai plastic manufacturers to join business matching event
A group of Thai plastic manufacturers will attend a business matching event in Phnom Penh later this month that will serve as a platform from which to explore opportunities in the Kingdom and partner up with local firms, the organisers said.
“The event aims to promote business relations and it is an opportunity for Cambodia and Thai businesspeople to connect and find business partners, especially for the production of plastic products like plastic bags and plastic boxes,” said the Cambodia Chamber of Commerce.
CCC said the event comes at a propitious time, with possibilities in the sector opening up after the government passed legislation last year restricting plastic bag imports.
“The Cambodian government wants to eliminate imports of plastic bags. Thai firms want to invest in Cambodia to make plastic products here so that we don’t need to import,” said Nguon Meng Tech, CCC’s director-general.
“We import most of our plastic products from abroad, so this type of investment will be greatly welcomed.”
In October, the government, at the request of the Ministry of Environment, issued a sub-decree on the management of plastic bags.
The sub-decree, which contains 32 articles, strongly urges citizens to reduce the use of plastic bags and reuse them to protect the environment.
The ministry also set out measures to restrict imports of plastic bags, charge those who use them, and encourage people to switch to reusable alternatives.
The business matching event is being organised with the participation of Thailand’s PTT Global Chemical Public Company Limited.
