Cambodia: Steps to ease distress as informal economy recovers
As the country’s informal economy resumed after the government relaxed Covid-19 restrictions, rising prices of commodities and fuel continue to affect the consumer, according to reports.
At the meeting on “Informal Economic Promotion in the Post-Covid-19 Crisis” last week,
Heng Sophan Narith, Deputy Director General of the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) said ways to tackle the challenges to finding solutions are being looked into.
Vorn Pao, president of Independent Democracy of Informal Economy Association (IDEA) said that he wants the government to expedite the issuance of CEC certificates to workers working in the informal economy as soon as possible.
He said the association is cooperating with the Ministry of Labor, the Ministry of Women’s Affairs and relevant institutions to promote health care services for workers in the informal economy.
The NSSF of the Ministry of Labor and Vocational Training established the SPIN Project in 2018 with the participation of the Social Health Protection Association (SHPA) and the International Labor Organization (ILO), including development partners, supported by the French Agency for Development (AFD) and the Weave Our Future Foundation.
The purpose of the project is to contribute to the expansion of the scope of social security, more effective health care for vulnerable urban residents, including tuk-tuk, drivers and domestic workers in Phnom Penh. The project will be completed by the end of November 2022.
