Cambodia’s first Food Street opens in Kampot

Kampot this week opened the first area in Cambodia dedicated exclusively to street food.

Food Street was officially inaugurated Wednesday, offering local delicacies and targeting mostly tourists.

The launch took place just two days ahead of the annual Sea Festival, which this year is held in Kampot. The festival is expected to attract at least half a million tourists.

Kampot’s Food Street will be the first of many, each one in a different province and highlighting the province’s cuisine, authorities have confirmed.

It is a government initiative that aims to lure more tourists to the Kingdom by offering high-quality local dishes prepared with high hygienic standards.

The Kampot version of the initiative features 55 stalls with scrumptious local dishes.

Speaking at the launch, Tourism Minister Thong Khon said Food Street promotes hygiene in the preparation of street treats.

“Food Street will attract more tourists and will be of great benefit to the local economy,” he said. “Tourists can savour delicious foods prepared with cleanliness. They will witness the way the food is cooked, decorated and served, and the way Cambodians eat it.”

Mr Khon asked food vendors to tell customers the names of the dishes and their ingredients.

Ministry’s spokesman Top Sopheak yesterday said, “We chose Kampot province to pilot the programme but it will soon be expanded to other tourism-oriented provinces.”

He said Battambang province will host the next Food Street.
