Cambodia: Relief for newly imported right-hand drive car owners

Prime Minister Hun Sen has indicated that newly imported right-hand drive cars already shipped to the country need not change to left-hand drive, but urged their owners to pay the import tax by Wednesday (July 6).

The move comes as several right-hand drive cars remain stuck at the border awaiting clearance as Cambodia follows the left-hand drive system.

About 7000 owners of such cars have deposited the import tax, while 4299 others have modified to left-hand drive vehicles.

The prime minister released the figures during a meeting with the Asean para games delegation at the Peace Palace in Phnom Penh yesterday.

“Before I made the decision, I followed the matter, and yesterday the car owners said they will pay the tax and requested not to change the drive. Now, I have agreed to the request, but they should pay the tax,” Mr Hun Sen said.

The Prime Minister added that after paying the tax, owners of the cars will receive a receipt from the General Department of Customs and Excise before making the number plates at the Ministry of Public Work and Transports.

He also urged the people not to import right-hand drive cars anymore.

On Tuesday, about 200 right-hand drive car owners gathered at the Kour Srov Roundabout in Dangkao district to demand that they should not be forced to modify their vehicles to left-hand drive, but agreed to pay the taxes.

Since September last year to April this year, owners of imported cars have paid nearly $60 million in taxes, according to a statement from the department of customs.

Prime Minister Hun Sen also indicated that right-hand drive cars that already exist in Cambodia will be phased out in the next five years.
