Cambodia: New tobacco tax stamp features disseminated

A joint working group of the General Department of Taxation (GDT) and General Department of Customs and Excises (GDCE) have presented features of the new stamp tax to vendors in prime locations across the country, said a press statement.

The statement released last week by the GDT pointed out that the dissemination and presentation of the obligations and features have been conducted in 1,305 places in five different areas countrywide including Phnom Penh, Kampong Speu, Kandal, Takeo, Kep, Kampot, Preah Sihanouk, Koh Kong, Kampong Chhnang, Pursat, Battambang and Pailin.

Ming Ban Kosal, GDT’s Deputy Director and co-chief of the working group, said tobacco products produced in Cambodia need to be labelled with stamp tax issued by GDT, while those imported from other countries need to be labelled with stamp tax issued by GDCE.

“Both stamp tax for domestically-produced and imported tobacco products were produced using a kind of high-quality paper with QR Code and safety features that cannot be copied or fraudulently duplicated,” said Kosal, adding that vendors would be able to purchase the stamp from GDT for domestically-produced tobacco and or GDCE for imported ones.

Vendors have been also encouraged to provide information and updates regarding suppliers of cigarettes or tobacco products.

“Next measures would be the implementation of applicable laws and regulations such as confiscating improperly-labelled cigarettes, fining and filing lawsuits in courts, which will be implemented very soon without delay,” the statement warned, adding that GDT and GDCE would conduct more disseminations in other provinces.
