Cambodia: New border crossing closer to opening

Cambodia and Thailand have in-principle agreed to temporarily open a border crossing to facilitate trade and transportation of goods containers.

Cambodian officials and Thai officials have talked about the opening of the Stung Bot-Ban Nong Ian border crossing shared between Banteay Meanchey province and Sa Kaeo province in Thailand, said Vasim Sorya, spokesman at the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, yesterday.

“Authorities of both countries agreed to open the border crossing temporarily and only goods containers will be allowed to pass through,” Sorya said.

At the Cambodian side, offices for migrant and customs and excise officials have already prepared for the upcoming service, he added. “Currently, both sides are in talks over the procedures of border-crossing transportation,” he said. Cambodia and Thailand inaugurated the Stung Bot-Ban Nong Ian Friendship in April 2019, connecting Banteay Meanchey province of Cambodia to Sa Kaeo province of Thailand.

Parking lots and other facilities are under construction on the Cambodian side to support the full operation of the checkpoint, Sorya said.

Thailand’s Ministry of Commerce revealed Thailand has agreed to open a new border crossing to boost trade with Cambodia, it was reported on Oct 1.

The crossing at the newly constructed Nong Ian-Stung Bot-Ban Friendship Bridge in Sa Kaeo province will be opened early but Thailand has yet to complete construction of its checkpoint and goods will be transported through the Nong Ian checkpoint by container only, Commerce Minister Jurin Laksanawisit said.
