Cambodia: Kingdom likely to seek British funds for MRT

Both countries discussed new opportunities and exchanged technical views on financing models for infrastructure development. The discussion centred on the planning and financing the Mass Rapid Transit system for Phnom Penh.

Cambodia plans to seek funds from the United Kingdom for the development of the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system in the city.

The matter came up at a meeting on Friday between Touch Chan Kosal, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Public Work and Transport and Dominic Williams, British Ambassador to Cambodia. The meeting was convened to discuss new opportunities, and exchange technical views on financing models for infrastructure development. The main topic of the discussion was planning and financing an MRT for Phnom Penh.

Kosal represented MPWT Minister Sun Chanthol at the meeting, which was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF), Phnom Penh Capital Hall, British financial institutions, international investment companies, infrastructure, and project authority.

The meeting was also attended by the top management of ARUP Group, a British multinational professional services firm that offers designing, engineering, architecture, planning, and advisory services, and some top technical officials.

Specialists shared their work experiences in the UK and the ASEAN on transportation infrastructure development planning and funding methods, including the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) and the foreign direct investment (FDI) from the private sector.

After the discussions, MPWT officials told Khmer Times that they are still working on the project. The details about the geographical specification expected funding and others will be shared after the discussion reached a point.

During a discussion with a Chinese construction company last week, Prime Minister Hun Sen said the traffic in Phnom Penh now is extremely busy. He requested China Macro Group Ltd (CMG) to conduct an investment project study to construct high-speed rail from the city to the new international airport.
