Cambodia: Chamber of Commerce Law forthcoming

The draft of the new Law on the Chamber of Commerce is again being reviewed by the Cambodia Chamber of Commerce (CCC).

Once the proposed changes to the draft are completed, the law will be sent to the Council of Ministers for further discussion and approval, a CCC official said.

Lim Heng, CCC’s vice-president, said yesterday that last year this piece of legislation already reached the Council of Ministers, but that it was sent back to the CCC for further deliberation and input.

“We continue to debate the law and cannot say when it will be ready,” Mr Heng said.

The new legislation will guide the way Cambodia sets up chambers of commerce in other countries, paving the way for overseas investors to open branches in the kingdom.

“We need representative offices abroad to discuss investment in Cambodia,” Mr Heng said. “This will also make it easier for the private sector to obtain information on doing business in the kingdom.

“We will set up offices in bigger countries and areas with sizeable overseas Cambodian populations, such as Europe, the United States, and Canada,” Mr Heng said.

The Cambodia Chamber of Commerce was established under the Law on Chamber of Commerce, which was promulgated in 1995.

Cambodia has several commercial centres in China, including Macau, Nanning, Guangzhou and Beijing.
