Brunei: Rise in locals entering private sector in 2017

The number of locals entering the private sector workforce in 2017 saw a rise of 2.2 per cent to 54,489 individuals compared to 53,336 in 2016.

However, the overall total employment in the private sector decreased by 0.6 per cent from 115,985 (2016) to 115,329 (2017).

According to the Report of Summary Findings of the Annual Census of Enterprises (ACE) 2017 released by the Department of Economic Planning and Development (JPKE) under the Ministry of Finance and Economy (MoFE), Wholesale and Retail Trade had the most workforce with 25,533 employees (22.1 per cent) followed by Construction at 20,979 (18.2 per cent); Professional, Technical, Administrative and Support Services at 14,533 (12.6 per cent); and others.

The report also found that 6,047 enterprises – comprising 2,442 micro (with less than five workers), 2,490 small (with five to 19 workers); 944 medium (with 20 to 99 workers), and 171 enterprises (with 100 or more workers) – were reported as active in 2017.

The top three economic activities were Wholesale and Retail Trade with 2,081 enterprises (34.4 per cent), followed by Construction with 764 enterprises (12.6 per cent), and Accommodation and Food Services Activities with 668 enterprises (11.0 per cent).

Total revenue from business activities saw an increase of nine per cent from BND21.3 billion in 2016 to BND23.2 billion in 2017. Mining and Quarrying generated the highest revenue with BND7,464.7 million (32.2 per cent) followed by Manufacturing with BND4,874.4 million (21.0 per cent), and Wholesale and Retail Trade with BND4,283.9 million (18.5 per cent).

The main objective of ACE 2017, conducted in December 2017, was to collect the latest information pertaining to the growth, contribution, composition and distribution of the economic activities undertaken by the business enterprises in the private sector.

The report presents data on the profile and performance of the private sector businesses in 2016 and 2017.

The data for 2015, previously released in the Preliminary Report of the Economic Census of Enterprises (ECE) 2016, has also now been finalised and revised.
