Cambodia: Banking sector attracts $4b foreign investment in five years
In the last five years, the banking sector attracted more than $4 billion in foreign investment, which is equivalent to 21 percent of the total foreign investment in Cambodia, according to a report on the key achievements of the Cambodian government from 2017 to 2021.
The foreign investment in the banking sector was $1.8 billion in 2017.
The reports said total assets in the banking sector increased by 149 percent of GDP from 95 percent in 2017, while the financial depth increased to around 138 percent from 88 percent.
Sum Sannisith, Deputy Governor of the National Bank of Cambodia, said that the banking system in Cambodia remains stable and resilient and continues to play an essential role in supporting economic growth.
As of December 2021, the bank loans increased by 22.1 percent, it noted.
“The situation of Covid-19 has been steadily improving, with the Royal Government taking timely measures, especially the vaccination of Covid-19 to more than 90 percent of the population, and launching supportive policies for vulnerable people, he said.
