Cambodia: New firms commence garbage collection in Phnom Penh
Three companies granted rights to collect and transport garbage in Phnom Penh commence their duties today, according to Phnom Penh City Hall. The announcement cited that some inconvenience in service level is expected initially.
The official start of the new garbage collection system comes nearly two years after the government revoked the licence of Cintri, which has provided that service since 2019. The new collection arrangement covers all 14 districts in Phnom Penh.
The three companies making their debut today are 800 Super/Global Action for Environment Awareness Public Limited, Mizuda Group Co, Ltd and CINTRI (Cambodia/Everbright (China).
800 Super/Global Action for Environment Awareness Public Limited will be responsible for rubbish collection in five districts –Tuol Kork, Russei Keo, Sen Sok, Chroy Changva and Prek Pnov.
Mizuda Group Co, Ltd will serve five districts as well, covering Daun Penh, Prampi Makara, Dangkor, Por Senchey, and Kambol.
CINTRI (Cambodia/Everbright (China) will provide service to four districts- Chamkar Mon, Boeng Keng Kang, Meanchey and Chbar Ampov.
Residents of Phnom Penh have high hopes of good service from the new arrangement.
“Having new companies will expectedly serve the rubbish collections better from the present because sometimes garbage has been left along designated places for days,” said Heng Virak, a resident in Tuol Sangke market, Russei Keo district. He also called on authorities to punish those disposing of rubbish improperly.
People utilising garbage collection services have been required to pay online via money transfer agents.
The rubbish issue has been a sensitive issue in Phnom Penh for some time as trash collection failed to function well.
Four tonnes of waste are generated in the city yearly. It is comprised of a mix of general, plastic and solid waste matter, according to the Ministry of Environment.
Half of the total waste is properly collected and stored at the dumpsite, while the rest is placed in inappropriate places or thrown into the rivers or burned.
