Cambodia – Property tax app: Convenience, transparency and efficiencies

The General Department of Taxation (GDT) has announced that payment of property tax is now possible via mobile phone through the “GDT Taxpayer App”.

The announcement was issued on March 11 and signed by Kong Vibol, minister attached to the Prime Minister and director-general of the taxation department. It stated that the GDT Taxpayer App would ensure the efficiency and transparency of revenue collection as well as make it more convenient for property taxpayers because they no longer need to visit tax offices, branches or commercial banks that are GDT partners to make their payments.

The app will also allow property taxpayers to check information on their registered information and update their real estate or property holdings to the GDT’s property data management system directly.

They can also pay their annual property tax without having to fill in a tax return form. This will save time because it alleviates them of the responsibility of having to pay taxes at the provincial-khan tax branch or at commercial bank partners of the General Department of Taxation.

Property taxpayers will also no longer need to go to the provincial-khan tax branch where their property is located to verify their tax receipt. They will receive various notices such as the dates of tax declaration, tax payment expiration, certain tax declarations in any taxable period and other notices related to property taxes via the app..

The app can be downloaded via Play Store for Android and the App Store for iOS. It is   available for properties which have already registered and have updated information in the property data of the GDT.

Properties which have not yet been registered or been updated with current information will require a visit by the owners to a tax office or branch to complete those processes before they can use the app.

“The GDT believes that the public and property owners will gain benefits from this programme, since it saves time and makes paying taxes more convenient as well allowing for the monitoring of the status of payments for their property,” said Vibol.

Phnom Penh real estate agency Century 21 Cambodia Executive Director Grace Rachny Fong said the Cambodian people are well aware of their property tax obligations as property owners.

“Paying tax contributes to economic growth,” said Grace. She added that it is of key importance for the government to inform citizens about any changes.
