Myanmar: Legislature beefs up consumer protections
The Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (Assembly of the Union) passed amendments to improve consumer rights in the country on Friday.
Under the amendments to the 2014 Consumer Protection Law, a consumer protection commission and committee will be formed, said U Swe Tint Kyu, director of the Department of Consumer Affairs.
A new commission instead of a central committee will be formed, he added.
“It will no longer be the Central Committee for Consumer Protection. Instead it will be the Myanmar Consumer Protection Commission,” U Swe Tint Kyu said on Monday. Under the amendments, consumer dispute resolution groups in states and regions will be replaced by consumer protection commissions.
“Previously, the dispute settlement groups only resolved disputes, but the new commissions will have a wider scope and be able to lay down policies in regions and states,” he said.
However, he did not say when the commissions will be set up. The changes in the law were approved by the Pyidaungsu Hluttaw on Friday and must be signed by the president before being enacted.
