Laos: Vientiane Highway Compensation Estimated To Be At Least US$ 40 Million

(KPL) The compensation for the losses of people’s property and houses to pave the way for the development of the Vientiane Highway running parallel to the Kaysone Phomvihane Road has been estimated to be at least 40 million US dollars.

Negotiation is underway between relevant authorities and potential affected families, Director of Natural Resources and Enivoronment Department of Vientiane Bounma Phoutthavong told the 5th ordinary meeting of the Vientiane People’s Council (Jul 16-18).

The construction of the highway is expected to begin early 2019.

A feasibility study into the development of the Vientiane Highway has been conducted since 2017 by China North Industries Corporation (NORINCO) and Asia Investment, Development and Construction Sole Company.

The project will be developed as a BOT project with a concessional term of 50 years, according to Mr Bounma Phoutthavong.

The highway will be 15.3 km long traversing 6 villages – Nakhae, Xay, Xaysavang, Dongsanghin, Done Tiew and Dongmakkhay – in Xaythany district and 12 villages – Nonkhor, Hongkae, That Luang Tai, Viengchaleun, Huakhua, Nonsavang, Nonsanga, Vangxay, Phonphanoa, Nongnieng, Hongsouphab and Xokyai – in Saysettha district.

At the meeting, people’s representatives voiced concerns about whether the compensation for people’s property will be suitable so that the affected people can have enough money to settle in other areas.
