Indonesia: Inflation to reach 0.20 to 0.25% in June: Economic chief
Coordinating Economic Minister Darmin Nasution has estimated that inflation will reach 0.20 to 0.25 percent in June, due to controllable prices of staple foods during the Ramadhan fasting month and ahead of the Idul Fitri holiday.
“The prices are in OK condition. The prices of rice and meat are all OK,” said Darmin in Jakarta recently as reported by tribunnews.com.
Inflation was recorded at 0.21 percent in May, according to the Central Statistics Agency (BPS). Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati said it was the lowest inflation during the fasting month in the last several years. She said usually the inflation at Ramadhan reached about 0.5 percent.
The increase in the price of eggs would likely contribute to June inflation, Darmin said, adding that another significant contributor was the increase of airline tickets during the Idul Fitri mudik (exodus).
“Eggs will contribute to inflation, but it is not much. What we have to anticipate is the increase of airline fares. The prices of tickets change [during mudik],” Darmin said, adding that the government could not control the airline ticket prices.
Previously, Bank Indonesia had estimated that June inflation would reach about 0.22 percent. (bbn)
