Laos: Foreign ministry disseminates treaties and international agreements law
Government officials met in the capital yesterday to learn about the Law on Treaties and International Agreements as part of concerted efforts to increase regulatory understanding among civil servants.
The meeting took place at the International Cooperation and Training Centre in Vientiane on Tuesday morning and was attended by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Saleumxay Kommasith, and government officials.
The purpose of the meeting was to give participants more understanding about the law on Treaties and International Agreements for uniform implementation of the law. Participants also discussed and share experiences on principles and regulations about devising and implementing treaties and international agreements.
During the event, Mr Saleumxay highlighted to participants points to concentrate on for discussion to boost comprehension of the law.
Deputy Director General of Treaties and Law Department under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr Somkhit Vankham, then gave a detailed explanation of the law’s contents.
The draft to the Law on Treaties and International Agreements was approved by the National Assembly at its third ordinary session on May 8, 2017, and announced on promulgation by the President of the Lao PDR on June 19, 2017.
The law has 8 parts and 23 chapters which are divided into 137 articles. The purpose of the law is to determine principles, regulations and measures in managing, developing and implementing treaties and international agreements uniformly across the country so as to apply Lao foreign policy to link with the region and international community, thereby contributing to national protection and development.
The Law on Treaties and International Agreements will become a reference for government organisations and other sectors in foreign affairs to boost international relations and cooperation.
