Indonesia: Trade Ministry Sets Up Market Wait Task Force to Control Prices

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Trade Ministry has established Market Wait Task Forces (Satgas Tunggu Pasar) aimed at securing food commodity supplies in traditional markets. The task forces are spread in 70 regencies and cities with the potential to have price volatility ahead of Eid day.

“Those task forces will work with industry agencies and trade agencies in the region. Once there is a shortage of supplies, we will send additional supplies,” Trade Minister Enggartiasto Lukita said in Jakarta on Saturday, June 17.

According to the Minister, his institution has also instructed food commodity distributors and importers in the regions to immediately send food commodities should there is a shortage.

Enggar also highlighted price of garlic that has increased in the past weeks. Ahead of Eid day, he said garlic price should be stable.

“Once there is a price increase, we will investigate to find out who import the commodity. We won’t grant them import permit anymore. Together, we all have to control the price,” he said.

Enggar added one week ahead of Eid Day, food commodity sales will increase; therefore he will coordinate with Agriculture Ministry to secure the supply.
