Indonesia: To your doorstep: Pertamina launches gas, fuel delivery service amid pandemic

Indonesia’s largest fuel distributor, state-owned Pertamina, has launched a free door-to-door delivery service for customers in Pekanbaru, Riau, to facilitate physical distancing amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The energy giant deployed four motorcycles earlier this week to deliver gasoline, diesel, lubricants and 5.5-kilogram liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) canisters around Pekanbaru. The service is available from 8 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. with selling prices similar to those at Pertamina gas stations. Delivery will be free of charge until May 31.

“We continue to coordinate with the regional administration and security forces to ensure undisrupted fuel, LPG and avtur distribution via land and sea,” Pertamina’s communications manager for the region, Roby Hervindo, said in a statement on Monday.

“Pertamina will fulfill energy needs even amid the pandemic. Be wise when using the fuel and LPG,” he added.

He said the delivery men were equipped with gloves and facemasks, among other personal protective gear.

The statement said Pertamina’s regional fuel stocks were sufficient, without specifying the product, for up to 40 days ahead, while LPG stocks were enough for 24 days. The company’s benchmark safe level is 22 days.

The government declared a public health emergency last week after Indonesia’s coronavirus death toll climbed to the highest level in Southeast Asia. The country has detected 2,738 cases as of Tuesday, including 221 deaths, official data show.
