Indonesia: Sales of local products close to 50 percent of 12.12 transactions

Organizers of the National Online Shopping Day (Harbolnas), also known as the 12.12 shopping festival, say the share of Indonesian product sales was close to 50 percent of transactions made during the festival, which was recorded at Rp 3.1 trillion (US$213.84 million).

Harbolnas organizing committee chairman Indra Yonathan said the high share of local product sales, which was initially targeted only at Rp 1 million, was supported by the sales of products manufactured by small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

“In this year’s Harbolnas, we were focusing on helping enhance local products’ ‘tradability’ through e-commerce platforms. We are happy that nearly half of the transactions involved local products,” said Indra as quoted by kompas.comon Thursday.

Meanwhile, according to Nielsen’s data, the share of local product sales was 46 percent of total sales during the shopping festival.

Indra said the high share of local product sales was very important because it was an indication that online shoppers had started to pay attention to Indonesian products, with the hope that the portion of the sales would continue to increase.

“I hope it will be a point [for the marketplaces] to start displaying more local products on their platforms,” Indra added. (bbn)
