Indonesia: Rudiantara Affirms to Close Facebook

TEMPO.COJakarta – Communication and Informatics Minister Rudiantara asserted the ministry will surely shut down social media platform Facebook in Indonesia following its users` data breach scandal.

“We will see the progress first. But I will not hesitate if I have to close Facebook,” said Rudiantara in South Jakarta, on Monday night, April 9.

As previously reported, Facebook was involved in breaching over one million Indonesian users’ data to political consultant institution Cambridge Analytica. There were 87 million users exposed to the data breach worldwide.

The ministry has sent a written notice on April 5 and urged Facebook to submit a report on the number of Indonesian users` whose data were breached. “We demand Facebook to tell us should the number changes,” said Rudiantara, adding that Facebook has to respond in one week after the letter sent.

On the other hand, the minister was informed that Facebook found a similar institution who allegedly involved in data-stealing named CubeYou. He has assigned his staff to ask Facebook confirmation regarding the issue.

Communication and Informatics Ministry along with National Police has conducted a thorough investigation. The police spokesman Brig. Muhammad Iqbal stated that the police supports the government to protect the rights of privacy for Indonesian citizen.

Iqbal mentioned that Police Criminal Directorate has started a further investigation as suggested by the ministry. In the near future, he claimed that police will coordinate with related institutions regarding Facebook data breach scandal.
